Construction Machines Clash in China

For some, settling workplace disputes involves calm, but heated verbal exchanges. For others, it consists of climbing into a piece of heavy construction machinery and using it as a weapon.

This cellphone video, circulating the web this month, shows the latter: A violent dustup between front-end loaders spurred by a dispute between two rival concrete plants over which company was to work on a new development project.

The street battle, which also featured the use of pellet guns, took place in Xingtang County, China, according to various reports. Officials said two workers were injured, including the driver of one of the vehicles. Six front-end loaders were reportedly damaged in the clash.

Local reports say workers from the Jianwen Concrete Plant stormed the Xinghua Concrete Plant intending to take over work on a new building project.

The incident is under investigation and no arrests have been made, according to the New York Times.

Common Altercations?

Violence over construction projects is common in China, but mostly the disputes are between residents or landowners and builders, The Times reported.

Conflicts between builders and related companies are far less common, according to the news bureau.

The front-loader feud may be indication that slowing growth in China is putting intense pressure on the construction industry, the report noted.
