Fire-resistant coatings would be mandatory in all new commercial buildings in Philadelphia, under a newly introduced bill.

Philadelphia City Council’s Licenses and Inspections committee approved the measure last week, according to

The coating would give firefighters a chance to extinguish the fire and still be in a safe area, according to Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer.

Under the bill, the coatings would be required on roof trusses or other engineered materials in the new buildings, the report said. A similar measure is reportedly already in play for new residential structures within the city.

A copy of the measure was not immediately available for review.

Fire Commissioner Support

“These truss construction[s] could fail within five minutes so with the coating it gives you about an hour protection,” Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer told the committee.

“Instead of the structure collapsing, we have a chance [of] getting in [and] extinguishing the fire and still be in a safe area.”

Chemistry Group Cheers

The move to make commercial structures safer for occupants and firefighters was applauded by the North American Flame Retardant Alliance.

“We applaud the Philadelphia City Council for passing legislation that will strengthen fire safety requirements for new buildings,” said Bryan Goodman, spokesman for the alliance.

“Officials realize that strong fire safety requirements and the tools and chemistries used to meet those requirements help save lives,” he said.

Goodman also said that Philadelphia is experiencing the lowest recorded number of fire deaths in the city’s history, noting that enhanced efforts to address fire safety, including requiring fire-resistant coating technologies have played a key role.

Philadelphia officials did not respond to requests for further comment.
