Nanomaterials manufacturer Carbodeon of Vantaa, Finland, has announced the release of a new additive for fluoropolymer coatings.

Based on its uDiamond NanoDiamond technology, the additive targets solvent-based coatings used in automotive, aerospace and industrial businesses. It also can be used in food manufacturing and consumer product applications.

Carbodeon's new additive targets solvent-based coatings used in automotive, aerospace and industrial businesses.

According to Carbodeon, the additive doubles the wear resistance of standard fluoropolymer coatings without making them abrasive. It also purportedly maintains or improves the existing low friction properties.

The additive consists of diamond particles less than 10 nanometers that are produced alongside Carbodeon’s existing uDiamond NanoDiamond products, the manufacturer says.

It also features a newly designed surface chemistry to suit fluoropolymer materials. According to company, this enables the particles to disperse into the coatings without becoming forming into a mass and produces a high diamond surface area.

The additive is intended to work at very low concentrations, reducing costs and making it practical for use in more markets.

This is Carbodeon’s second application-specific uDiamond NanoDiamond product of 2016. The company launched uDiamond Plating Additive for Electroless Nickel in January, a NanoDiamond additive that Carbodeon claims enhances wear resistance and surface interaction properties without compromising corrosion resistance.
