Steve Revnew of Sherwin-Williams describes the development of an effective microbicidal coating, as well as coating materials that diminish odors and eliminate formaldehyde, in the article, “Paint as a Powerful Tool in Health-Care Settings.” And Jayson Helsel of KTA-Tator provides a guide to specifying coatings for hospitals in his article, “Selecting Coatings for Hospitals by Service Area.”

On the topic of building enclosure coatings, Carolyn Richter of the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) describes how the CRRC has incorporated an accelerated weathering method in its Product Rating Program. CRRC now offers “Rapid Ratings,” an optional product rating process which develops interim laboratory-aged values for roofing materials, including reflective roof coatings.

The Rapid Ratings process lets companies have their products tested under ASTM D7897-15 and lists properties measured after laboratory aging as “aged” values on both the CRRC Rated Products Directory and on the CRRC product label. Her article is titled, “From 3 Years of Aging to 3 Days: Generating Interim Roof Ratings with Laboratory Aging.”

The 2016 technical program of the Air Barrier Association of America is described by Ryan Dalgleish of the ABAA in his article, “ABAA Programs Solidify and Promote Air Barrier Technology.” He details new ABAA training and certification programs.

He also focuses on research initiatives to develop an air barrier energy calculator; to establish a methodology to measure the amount of liquid water that penetrates a material; to test for air leakage in existing building before and after retrofit; to determine the impact of permeable and non-permeable materials on air leakage; and to determine the relative effectiveness of various strategies for retrofitting CMU buildings on their interiors.
