The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are seeking outstanding transportation infrastructure projects or programs for its annual awards contest.

The America’s Transportation Awards competition recognizes the best transportation construction projects across America and highlights the benefits they provide to communities throughout the country.

The America’s Transportation Awards competition is inviting nominations for the best transportation construction projects across America in 2016; the Port of Miami Tunnel (shown) was among the 2015 entries.

Nominations are due by April 11.

Competition Structure

The awards program is divided into three categories, which are further separated into three groups based on size.

The Quality of Life & Community Development category features projects that improve safety, mobility, connectivity and economic vitality across communities. Entries should clearly state how the project enhances safety, reduces congestion, benefits other transportation modes and encourages long-term economic development.

The Best Use of Innovation segment recognizes best practices in the use of innovative methods and techniques throughout the project. Nominations should describe the overall benefits from applying innovation and implementing technology to their practices, and why such tactics were chosen over conventional project delivery methods. The category highlights practices that contributed to such things like work zone safety, overall efficiencies, and reduced construction impacts and schedule duration.

Under Budget recognizes best practices in reducing project costs and maximizing resources that promote and ensure fiscal responsibility. Nominations should explain how transportation officials were able to complete the project by managing and saving tax dollars responsibly.

Each category above is divided by size:

  • Large – more than $200 million;
  • Medium – between $26 million and $199 million; and
  • Small – less than $25 million.

Competition entries will be judged at the regional and national level by a panel made up of all facets of the transportation industry. Projects winners by region will be announced throughout the summer.

The top 10 projects with the highest scores compete for the national Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced in Boston at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in November.

Quality Transportation Services

According to the organizations, the America’s Transportation Awards was created to showcase the excellent work done by state departments of transportation to deliver quality transportation services to the American public.

The stories that are told through the contest entries help build support for transportation investment at the federal, state, and local levels, they add.

Both the Grand Prize and People’s Choice winners will receive $10,000 to give back to their communities, according to the competition site.

Additional guidelines on how to enter, what to submit, judging criteria, past years’ entries and more are available at the America’s Transportation Awards site
