Finding ways to extend the lifespan of coatings on steel structures that lack uniform surface areas is the focus of the next free webinar from JPCL and SSPC.

Coatings veteran Jim Machen will present "Stripe Coating—A Key Component for Extending Coating Service Life" from 11 am to noon ET Thursday, March 3.

"Stripe Coating—A Key Component for Extending Coating Service Life" addresses the challenges irregularly shaped steel surfaces present to maintaining coating service life.

Webinar participants will be eligible to receive continuing education credits from SSPC.

Participants may register here free.

What You Will Learn

Virtually all steel structures, particularly older ones, contain irregularly shaped surfaces such as lattice box members, crevices between mating plies, rivet or nut/bolt patterns, outside corners/edges, and other complex configurations. These surfaces present challenges to applying uniform and sufficiently thick protective coating films, Machen explains.

In his presentation, Machen will explore the importance of stripe coating for extending coating service life, proven field methods and steps for applying effective, quality stripe coats and proposes specification wording to achieve those ends.

He will also feature the content of SSPC Guide 11, Protecting Edges, Crevices, and Irregular Steel Surfaces by Stripe Coating.

Presenter Experience

Jim Machen is a senior coatings consultant with KTA where he has been employed for more than 20 years. He is a NACE Certified Coatings Inspector Level 3 (Peer Review), an SSPC Certified Protective Coatings Specialist, and a Level II Inspector in accordance with ASTM D4537.

In his current position, Machen performs consulting activities (i.e., coating failure analysis, coating system recommendations, specification preparation, and major project management) for a variety of clients in the transportation, water/wastewater, power generation, chemical processing and marine industries.

His specification development experience includes the preparation of technical painting specifications for numerous water and chemical storage tanks, bridges and other heavy industrial, commercial and architectural applications.

He serves as a principal instructor for several in-house KTA coatings training seminars for private and public companies.

Webinar Education Series

The webinar is part of the 2016 JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board.

To do so, applicants must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam, which costs $25.
