Surface preparation and coatings are the topic at hand when SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings’ Heather Stiner presents at the upcoming PDA Annual Conference.

Stiner, an SSPC Protective Coatings Specialist, will host a session titled “A Coating Is Only as Good as Its Surface Preparation,” the morning of April 19 during the event in Costa Mesa, CA.

The Importance of Surface Prep

In her presentation, Stiner will explore why preparing the surface for subsequent application of the coating system is the most critical—and typically the most expensive—step in an industrial coatings project.

At the upcoming PDA conference, Heather Stiner will explore why preparing the surface for subsequent application of the coating system is the most critical—and typically the most expensive—step in an industrial coatings project.

Whether the surface is plastic, glass, wood, concrete, masonry, aluminum, carbon steel or stainless steel, surface preparation—cleaning and roughening the surface—remains a key factor in determining the ultimate service life of the applied system, she explains.

In general terms, the better the surface preparation, the longer the life of the coating system, she adds. Stiner will also address why not all surfaces or service environments (the environment that the coating system must perform in, for example immersion, atmospheric, chemical, etc.) and not all coating systems demand the same degree of surface preparation.

About the Presenter

Stiner is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Her career includes positions with PPG Industries and Sauereisen Inc., a leading manufacturer of organic linings, ceramic adhesives and refractories.

In addition to her work with SSPC, Stiner is a member of the American Chemical Society, ASTM and NACE.

The 2016 PDA Annual Conference: Polyurea’s Path to the Future is a three-day event taking place at the Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa, CA.

Running from April 18-20, this year’s meeting features a focus on education and the correct application of polyurea, the association says.

Session are geared toward formulators applicators and distributors with topics that include the state of the industry, innovative coatings projects, and new formulas and processes.
