From architecture to automobiles, powder coatings boast a plethora of color options.

One of America's powder coatings manufacturers has recently released its forecast for colors expected to shine this year and next.

“Our color trend palettes range from a wistful collection of modern colors with their roots firmly planted in the past, through soft, calming neutrals to rich, heady brights that are reminiscent of the excesses in society today,” IFS Coatings President Glynn Mason said in the company’s Jan. 27 statement.

Working with the 55,000 colors in its color database, IFS Coatings analyzes what's new, what's happening and which special effects are popular to come up with its annual color trends.

These color trends are targeted to customers in the architectural; automotive; agricultural, construction and earth-moving equipment; appliance; hardware; furniture; general industrial applications (such as propane tanks); lighting; and applicator markets, according to the Gainesville, TX-based manufacturer.

Societal Trends

The IFS color palettes for 2016 take their inspiration from five societal trends, the company says, each featuring its own color palette of 10 to 12 colors. The color schemes not only include colors but also the special effects that represent the trends identified by IFS.

“Delivering unparalleled product and service to the industry means we need to be able to advise our customers on what colors they will see in the next couple of years as well as provide those shades in high quality powder coatings,” Mason said.

Working with the 55,000 colors in its color database, the company analyzes what's new, what's happening and which special effects are popular, it says.

The 2016 trends sees a return of shades from the warmer end of the color wheel, as well as special effects that add depth and interest to some of the hues, it adds.

Palette: Looking Back, Moving Forward

IFS says this palette is built around the concept that we have a huge appreciation of the past and that, as previous trends have shown, we come to value more and more what we had before and look for ways to build that into our current lives.

The company suggests that companies and brands that want to create an emotional connection to improve buying probability might use these colors to demonstrate this connection to the past and use it to shape their future.

The colors and effects in this trend are a collection of rich, muted, pigmented colors from a warm gold to a rich purple with deep, inviting berry colors rounding off the palette.

Warm, friendly and tried and tested, these gorgeous shades are inspired by the past and handcrafted products and materials.

Palette: Health to Happiness

This color palette draws connections to health and happiness, whether associated with fitness and nutrition or balancing the mind and body. The idea of wellness—a more holistic approach to how we are and how we feel—has become cool, the company says.

This color scheme strives for calmness in a busy world with calm shades that inspire us to slow down and relax, including neutrals with a hint of color and warm soothing shades that balance, renew and restore.

Palette: Eye to Mouth

This trend, according to the company, makes a connection to the ways technology created a new “visual generation” that ultimately leads viewers to shy away from visual overload and a return to the comfort of the written word.

The colors in this collection are midtones that make use of what the company describes as “delicious inky blues, pencil and charcoal greys, soft browns and faded creams reminiscent of traditional parchment.”

Texture is equally important in this palette, IFS says.

Palette: Power of Play

The prevalence of gaming and play in our culture, whether on screen or tabletop, influences everything from education to business to society in general, the company says.

The colors in this schemed are described as bright, fun, energetic, eye-catching and strategic, while still preserving the muted, midtone look of the other palettes in the collection.

The colors here range from coral pink, warm orange, and a mustard-based yellow to deep, blue-toned greens.

Palette: What Is Too Much?

This color collection is inspired by the concept that, as a society, we amass a lot of—and maybe too much—“stuff.”

These colors are described as bright, vivid, “abundant” shades (warm red and orange tones, a translucent blue and purple) set against a choice matrix of simple neutrals like black and white.
