In recognition of his decades of work in weatherability and durability testing, Q-Lab Corporation President Doug Grossman was named the latest recipient of the prestigious Warren Ketola Memorial Award, his company announced Wednesday (Jan. 27).

The award is given in memory of Warren Ketola, a pioneer in weathering testing at 3M. Ketola was responsible for many of the early G03 weathering standards currently used throughout the world.

Mrs. Judy Ketola and daughter Dixie presented the award to Grossman during a special reception at the ASTM G03 Committee on Weathering and Durability meeting held Jan. 25 in San Antonio.

‘Make Things Simple and Clear’

Grossman is president of Q-Lab Corporation, a global provider of accelerated weathering testers, corrosion testers, contract testing services and standard test panels for paints headquartered in Westlake, OH.

Q-Lab Corporation President Doug Grossman received the prestigious Warren Ketola Memorial Award in recognition of decades of groundbreaking work and his unequivocal support of ASTM G03, his company announced.

He was chosen for this honor as a result of what is seen as the “groundbreaking work” he undertook with Ketola, as well as his unequivocal support of ASTM G03 over the past thirty years. Their joint efforts are said to have paved the way for the committee’s current success.

Grossman was also reported to be the first and most emphatic advocate of the principle: “The purpose of standards is to convey information to people who don’t already know it.  Make things simple and clear.”

Involved in the weathering and durability testing field since 1973, Grossman has been a member of Committee G03 since 1986, and served for many years as chairman of Committee D01, Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications.

With this background of commitment, he encourages and supports the active participation of a team of other Q-Lab employees in ASTM, ISO, EN, IEC, SAE, GB and other international standards.

Grossman also holds a number of U.S. and international patents in the field of accelerated weathering.

Doug has more than 40 years of experience in the design and development of durability test chambers, including the QUV, said to be the world's most widely used weathering tester.

About Committee G03

ASTM Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability was formed in 1965. It meets twice a year, in January and June, with approximately 25 members attending over three days of technical meetings.

The Committee, with a membership of approximately 150, currently has jurisdiction of over 29 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 14.04.

It has six technical subcommittees that maintain jurisdiction over these standards, which have and continue to play a preeminent role in all aspects of weathering and durability including: standard conditions, methods and instrumentation, and accelerated testing.
