Energy Star to Update Roof Coatings Rules

Roof coatings manufacturers are preparing for changes to testing methodology in order to rate products under the Energy Star program requirements.

Roof coatings must be aged in three different climate zones, under the new methodology.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Roof Products Specification Version 3.0 will become effective July 1, 2017. It will replace Version 2.3, which is currently in effect.

The Roof Coating Manufacturers Association recently provided a memo to its members discussing the revision and new requirements.

Aged in Three Climate Zones

“A critical change occurred from Version 2.3 to Version 3.0 regarding the aging of samples for 3-year aged testing,” RCMA reports.

The new language states that for 3-year aged solar reflectance values, products must be weathered in three different climate zones as described below:

  • Hot/Humid: A hot/humid climate is a region with Annual Heating Degree Day (HDD) at 65 degrees Fahrenheit of 200, Annual Cooling Degree Day (CDD) at 50F of 9474 and an average yearly relative humidity of 83 percent in the a.m. and 61 percent in the p.m. An example region is Miami.
  • Hot/Dry: A hot/dry climate is a region with Annual HDD at 65F of 1350, Annual CDD at 50F of 8245 and an average yearly relative humidity of 50 percent in the a.m. and 23 percent in the p.m. An example region is Phoenix.
  • Cold/Temperate: A cold/temperate climate is a region with Annual HDD at 65F of 6201, Annual CDD at 50F of 2755 and an average yearly relative humidity of 80 percent in the a.m. and 62 percent in the p.m. An example region is Cleveland. (The Cool Roof Rating Council’s S100 also lists Chicago, Youngstown, PA, and Pittsburgh as example regions.)

The Cool Roof Rating Council operates test farm locations in each example region, RCMA notes. Other test farm locations can be used if they are within plus/ minus 10 percent of the HDD, CDD and relative humidity requirements. The HDD and CDD are to be determined in accordance with ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 169-2006, RCMA adds.

Field measurements of in-situ roofs and lab-tested samples from in-situ roofs to determine 3-year aged reflectivity are no longer included in the new methodology.
