SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings launched the SSPC 2016 Featuring GreenCOAT conference Monday (Jan. 18) in San Antonio, TX. The event kicked off with its annual Awards Luncheon, honoring the best candidates in a range of categories.

Among the awards handed out Tuesday were the JPCL Editor's Awards, recognizing outstanding papers, and the SSPC Outstanding Publication Award, presented to the author(s) of the best technical paper or presentation.

This year, articles on pipeline restoration, bridge preservation, tank linings and other coating-related topics drew top awards during the ceremony.

At SSPC 2016 in San Antonio, JPCL and SSPC recognized several papers as representing the best of 2015 during an Awards Luncheon kicking off the four-day event.

Eligible technical papers are selected from the SSPC Conference Proceedings and JPCL articles from the previous year (July of the previous year through June of the current year) are eligible.

Five papers were selected from more than 100 eligible entries. All of the winning JPCL papers are available by clicking on their title links.

Outstanding Publication

From the original field of eligible papers, the JPCL editors select a handful to be considered by a second review team for the Outstanding Publication Award. Each paper is rated on a scale of 1-5 using certain criteria, and the paper with the highest rating is named the Outstanding Publication.

This year's Outstanding Publication Award went to Dudley Primeaux II and Todd Gomez of VersaFlex Inc. for "Pipeline Rehabilitation: Advances in Polyurea Spray Application."

Published in the July 2014 issue of JPCL, this paper addressed polyurea technology in pipelining work with a focus on developments in robotic polyurea spray technologies for in-place pipeline rehabilitation.

JPCL Editors' Awards

The JPCL Editors' Awards recognize the finalists nominated for the Outstanding Paper Award. Four Editors' Awards were presented Monday.

In "Close Encounters of the Third ‘Crude Oil’ Kind," published in November 2015, coauthors Vijay Datta and Mike O’Donoghue of International Paint LLC compare and contrast the accelerated laboratory autoclave performance of various types of epoxy linings for tank, vessel and pipe spool applications in the oil and gas industry.

In "Spot Painting for Bridge Preservation," the authors outline a research study that provides guidance on the materials, means and methods of spot painting to address bridge component deterioration caused by leaking joints and extensive use of deicing chemicals.

The January 2015 article was co-written by Theodore Hopwood and Sudhir Palle of Kentucky Transportation Center, University of Kentucky, and Bobby W. Meade of Greenman-Pedersen Inc.

"Surface Preparation: Adventures in Frustration" was written by Peter Bock, CUI Specialist and Consultant.

Bock’s article, published in July 2014, describes visual surface preparation standards, which are subject to individual interpretation by owners, inspectors and contractors. The author discusses potential ambiguities and provides insight into preventing disagreements, delays and costly reblasting.

The January 2015 paper "The Color of History: When the Brooklyn Bridge is Your Canvas" described a research study that provides guidance on the materials, means and methods of spot painting to address bridge component deterioration caused by leaking joints and extensive use of deicing chemicals.

The authors are Guerman Vainblat, P.E. and Timur Kolchinsky, E.I.T., both from Greenman-Pedersen Inc.

President's Lecture Series

SSPC also presented its President's Lecture Series Award to Patrick Cassidy, Elzly Technology Corporation, and Paul Slebodnick and James Tagert of the US Naval Research Lab for their paper, "Effect of Surface Preparation on Coatings Performance."

This award is given annually by the SSPC President, who chooses an outstanding paper presented at the annual conference that is a reflection on the coatings industry and profession.
