Denver Airport Hotel Takes Flight

A new time-lapse video of the recently completed $580 million hotel construction project at Denver International Airport captures three years of work in under 90 seconds.

Earthcam captured the progress via photographs and put them together here.

CityLab reports that the hotel, designed by Gensler, resembles the lapel wing pins airlines used to give to children or a giant mustache. Either way, the ambitious South Terminal Redevelopment Project, over 20 years in the making, adds a 500-room Westin as well as a new light rail station to the iconic airport campus.

A Black Eye?

The project has its share of critics, including one of the original designers of the tented Jeppeson Terminal, according to CityLab’s report.

Jim Bradburn wrote in a Denver Post opinion letter: “Upon returning to Denver for a visit, I was shocked to see that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men had given my iconic design for the terminal a big black eye! And it’s right in the center as you approach the terminal. What were they thinking?”

With the Westin, Denver joins a trend to make airports less transitory and more of a destination, according to reports.
