SSPC Event Spotlights Power Industry

From chemistry and application to inspection and specification, coatings professionals will find a variety of topics to choose from among the power and power generation programs offered at SSPC 2016 featuring GreenCOAT.

Running Jan. 18-21 in San Antonio, TX, this annual event from SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings is the only conference and exhibition dedicated exclusively to protective, marine, industrial and commercial coatings.

SSPC 2016 featuring GreenCOAT, which runs Jan. 18-21, in San Antonio, TX, includes a series of training and certification courses related to work in the power generation industries.

Training Programs

Attendees can register for select training and certification programs to be held at the convention center during the conference. Those of interest to those in power industry include:

  • Abrasive Blasting Program (C7)
  • Applicator Train-the-Trainer Program (ATT)
  • Coating Application Specialist Certification Program (CAS)
  • Coating Application Specialist Refresher (CAS REF)
  • Developing an Effective Coating Specification (DEV CTG SPEC)
  • Protective Coatings Inspector Program (PCI)
  • Quality Control Supervisor (QCS)
  • Selection of Coatings
  • Using SSPC PA 2 Effectively (PA 2)
  • Spray Application Program (C12)

Registration for SSPC Training Courses must be done separately from SSPC 2016 conference registration. The deadline for registration for these classes is Dec. 18.

Technical Sessions

During the Jan. 19 morning session on Adhesion, Andrew Recker of BASF Construction Chemicals will present Superhydrophobic Versus Freezing Point Suppression—Exploring Different Chemistry and Test Methodology of Ice Adhesion to Coatings.

SSPC 2016 also offers technical training presentations and committee meetings of interest to coatings professionals whose work involves power industries.

On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the midmorning Power session includes four technical presentations:

  • Coating Modern Wind Turbines—How Hard Can It Be? presented by Benedicte R. Sorensen, Jotun AS
  • The Nuclear Renaissance, Painting Vogtle 3 & 4, presented by Richard L. Smith II, PCS, Williams Specialty Services LLC
  • Unique Application of Epoxy Gel to Eliminate Penstock Cavitation and Potentially Improve Turbine Power Generation Efficiency, presented by Norm Klapper, Process Equipment Corporation
  • Styrene-Free Coatings for Flue Gas Desulfurization Applications, presented by Mike Durbin, The Sherwin-Williams Company

During the midmorning Oil & Gas Part II session on Thursday, Jan. 21, Michael MeLampy from PPG Industries will present Coatings for the Prevention of Corrosion Under Insulation.
