Coating Remade to Reduce Abrasions

A.W. Chesterton Company has introduced a reformulated ARC MX1 that the company says will help reduce high-impact and extreme sliding abrasions.

The ceramic reinforced epoxy lining, made with alumina ceramic beads and silicon carbide flakes, now includes high packing density, according to the company.

A.W. Chesterton Company has introduced a reformulated ARC MX1 that the company says will help reduce high-impact and extreme sliding abrasions.

According to the coatings manufacturer, high impact and sliding abrasion forces can come from materials handling systems, such as chutes; hoppers; pneumatic and hydraulic conveyance systems; and pipe elbows.

To improve impact resistance of the ARC MX1, the company says it used a hybrid polymer matrix to increase ductility and toughness while retaining the cohesive properties required for good application performance.

MX1 can be applied from a film thickness of 6 mm (240 mil) and up after grit blasting to a minimum of Sa 2.5/ SP10 (Near White) cleanliness with a 75-125 μm (3-5 mil) angular profile, according to the company. The reformulated MX1 can resist more than 68 NM (50 foot-pounds) of force, has tensile pull off adhesion values of 4,200 psi (295 kg/cm2) per ASTM D4541, and slurry abrasion response number of 1778 per ASTM G75, the company says.
