Webinar Eyes UV Coatings Protection

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

Coatings and substrates are subject to a number of environmental and atmospheric conditions that can negatively affect their aesthetic and performance properties. Understanding the protection UV absorbers offer from these factors is the focus of the next free webinar from JPCL and SSPC.

UV Stabilization of Organic Coatings” will be presented at 11 a.m. ET Wednesday, Nov. 11, by BASF technical expert Mervin G. Wood.

As Wood will demonstrate, organic substrates such as coatings, inks, adhesives and sealants with aesthetic, protective and other functional properties are exposed to a variety of environmental and artificial factors such as solar radition, humidity, temperature change, microbiological attack and air pollutants.

UV Stabilization of Organic Coatings” will explore the mechanisms of stabilization and different molecular classes of UVAs and hindered amine light stabilizers, and how they are used to stabilize coatings.

Light or heat-induced oxidation of organic materials is a complex radical process characterized by initiation, propagation, chain branching, autocatalytic chain and termination reactions.

UV absorbers (UVA) prevent the degradation of both coatings and substrates by filtering out the harmful UV radiation during the photolysis cycle and before subsequent photo-oxidation can take place.

This webinar will explore the mechanisms of stabilization and different molecular classes of UVAs and hindered amine light stabilizers, as well as how these molecules are used for the stabilization of coatings.

Webinar participants will be eligible to receive continuing education credits from SSPC.

About the Presenter

Mervin Wood is part of the BASF Transportation and Industrial Coatings & Plastics Technical Service Team located in Southfield, MI. As a technical expert, he is responsible for technical support for UV absorbers, light stabilizers and antioxidants for the NAFTA region.

Since 1988, Wood has held positions in process development, coatings research, toll and stilbenics manufacturing, and intellectual property management at the McIntosh, AL, and Tarrytown, NY, sites—all within Ciba/BASF.

Wood as more than 80 U.S. patents and 20 technical publications to his name, and has given tutorials on the degradation of organic coatings at the International Coatings Exposition.

He holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky, Lexington, and a doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry from Emory University.

Webinar Series

The webinar is part of the 2015 JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board.

To do so, applicants must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam, which costs $25.
