Federal workplace safety authorities say they are investigating the partial collapse of a one-story building that killed a construction worker on Thursday (Sept. 24) in Chicago.

The victim, identified as Daniel Miller, 46, of Chicago Ridge, was reportedly trapped under the rubble from the South Side building’s brick wall and concrete roof when rescue officials arrived at the scene around noon.

A building partially collapsed Thursday (Sept. 24) in Chicago's South Side, killing a worker on his first day on the job, reports said.

The Chicago Fire Department Media Affairs Chief Juan Hernandez told reporters that firefighters worked about an hour to shore up the partially collapsed structure in order to remove the victim from underneath the debris.

“The joist gave out,” a worker told an NBC News affiliate, adding that the falling building “instantly killed” Miller.

'First Day'

NBC Chicago also interviewed a co-worker who said Thursday had been Miller's first day on the job.

The news bureau also reported that Miller had been inside the building when the roof fell.

Reports have not identified his employer or the company in charge of the project.

Investigation Underway

While the cause of the collapse remained unknown Monday (Sept. 28), reports said Miller had been part of a crew removing roofing materials from the building under rehabilitation.

Officials from the city’s Department of Buildings said the workers lacked proper city permits to remove the roofing materials, a Fox News affiliate reported.

Reports say the workers lacked proper city permits.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration told D+D News that the agency had opened an investigation into the incident.

It could take OSHA up to six months to issue a violation in the case.
