Multinational coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel announced plans to invest in construction of a test plant for coating resins production.

More than €1.3 million (about US $1.5 million) will be spent to build the pilot plant at AkzoNobel’s Performance Coatings site in Felling, U.K., according to a news release issued Tuesday (Sept. 1).

The company plans for the state-of-the-art facility to produce resin samples for product testing, which may ultimately lead to scaled-up production for commercial use.

Product Innovation

"Coatings technology and product innovation is at the core of our business strategy, and this new facility will play an important part in that,” said Gareth Crapper, manager of Performance Coatings’ Technology Centre at Felling.

AkzoNobel has announced plans to invest in construction of a test plant for coating resins production.

“It also underlines our commitment to the Felling site, which has received more than €30 million (about US$34 million) of investment during the past five years," Crapper added.

Partial funding for the new facility came through the U.K. government's Let's Grow Regional Growth Fund program.

Let’s Grow was developed to provide grant support for capital investment and R&D projects that will create new, sustainable jobs in the North east of England.

Largest R&D Site

The Felling location is the Performance Coatings business's largest R&D site worldwide. The new pilot plant will be the latest addition to the campus.

The location currently employs approximately 300 scientists.

The new test plant will create three new jobs and protect 28 more on site.

Start-up is expected in the first quarter of 2016.

"In-house resin development is a key part of our coatings R&D effort," explained Adam Bell, head of the Scale-Up Team for the pilot plant.

"This facility will improve our delivery of large-scale resin for testing, while streamlining the scale-up process from the laboratory through to factory manufacturing."
