Nestled among historic towers and steeples in Rottweil, Germany, stands a 761-foot-tall concrete observation tower—the tallest in the country—built specifically to test elevators of the future.

That’s right; the German elevator company Thyssen Krupp has topped-out a concrete tube tower that will serve as a test bed for its latest innovations, the company announced Wednesday (July 29).

Going up! The testing tower took just over eight months to build.

Designed by architect Helmut Jahn, the tower was built by slipforming, which allows crews to pour a continuous concrete structure into formwork quickly.

At certain points in the construction, the tower rose at a rate of 13 feet per day, the company said. It took a total of 245 days to construct.

Elevator Innovations

The interior features 12 elevator shafts; three will be used to test a new system called Multi.

Multi is based on magnetic levitation technology used to propel the elevator’s cabins through a shaft, without conventional rope, according to Gizmodo. That system was also designed to allow elevator cabins to move horizontally, opening up new applications.

Visitors will soon be able to take the elevators up to the top of the 761-foot –tower for a bird’s eye view of historic Rottweil, Germany.

The remaining shafts in the tower will be used to test other technologies, including lifts that move up to 60 feet per second, Gizmodo reported.

Thyssen Krupp’s tower offers a “forward-looking design [with a] coherent link with Rottweil’s historic landscape,” the company said.
