WINDSOR, CT--A new measurement device from Fischer, the FA100, is intended to assess coating thickness, including the multi-layer polypropylene structures required for deep-sea conditions.

Corrosion prevention and insulation are top concerns for the oil and gas industry, as they transport liquid or gaseous products through undersea pipelines. Penetration of pipeline coatings can lead to leakage and negatively impact the environment.

Fischer's FA100 probe is designed to measure coating thickness in demanding environments.

To protect against this, pipes are typically enclosed in one or more layers (often up to 100 mm thick in total) of polypropylene, a highly resilient thermoplastic polymer that can withstand the harsh deep-sea conditions. Quality inspections can assess whether the layers are properly applied with a sufficient thickness to achieve the required performance properties.

Fischer reports that its new FA100 probe fully covers the thickness range up to 100 mm and can be connected to the handheld instruments of the FMP family, which enables mobile use. Additionally, the company says the FA100 plus FMP combination can handle multilayer structures regardless of coating type.

Measurement is performed by sliding the probe over the sample surface.

In the automatic measurement mode, the gauge screen shows a graphic representation of the coating thickness, which allows the user to assess coatings for evenness (concentricity/eccentricity). Final results are written to PDF via DataCenter software, and measurement area pictures and thickness annotations can be stored in application memories.
