New Antifouling Line Touts Fuel Savings

PITTSBURGH--PPG has launched a new line of antifouling coatings designed for a wide range of operating conditions.

The SIGMA SAILADVANCE range is designed for all vessel types and operating speeds and is particularly effective for slow-steaming ships because of the engineered CSP composition. The antifoulings also benefit from high-volume solids (up to 59 percent) for efficient application and evolve in a pattern of linear polishing, with consistent biocide release for predictable performance for up to 90 months.

The SIGMA SAILADVANCE MX and DX coatings provide the same high performance and fuel-saving potential as the SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700 and 800 products did for vessels under the widest operating profiles.

The Sigma Sailadvance line, from PPG's Protective & Marine business, consists of four coatings: two new and two rebranded.

The line is designed for all vessel types and operating speeds. PPG particularly recommends the systems for slow-steaming ships because of the controlled surface active polymers (CSPs) technology, which is designed to provide self-lubrication and a self-release mechanism.

PPG's Sigma Sailadvance line consists of two new and two rebranded coatings.

According to PPG, the CSPs act as a lubricant on the coating-water lining, lowering hull friction during sailing. PPG says the CSPs generate average fuel savings of 5 percent and create a slippery surface that increases resistance to fouling when a ship is idle.

The line consists of:

  • Sigma Sailadvance RX and GX, new formulations based on PPG-patented technologies; and
  • Sigma Sailadvance MX and DX, which are rebranded Sigma Syladvance 700 and 800 products.

The high-volume-solids (up to 59 percent) systems are designed to provide consistent biocide release, for predictable performance for up to 90 months, according to PPG.

The company provided the following descriptions:

Sailadvance RX and GX Coatings

  • Low-friction, self-lubricating, linear self-polishing antifouling based on hydrolyzable polymer binder composition;
  • Technology based on controlled surface active polymers (CSPs);
  • Idle time tolerance: average 25 days (RX) or 30 days (GX); and
  • Vessel operating rate: 50-90 percent (RX) or 40-80 percent (GX).

Sailadvance MX and DX Coatings

  • Low-friction, linear self-polishing antifouling based on organic hydrolyzable polymer binder;
  • Idle time tolerance: average 25 days (MX) or 30 days (DX); and
  • Vessel operating rate: 50-70 percent (MX) or 40-90 percent (DX).
