BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA—City leaders in the town of Winslow are seeing red—or orange, rather—since a mysterious paint job popped up on some city-owned property.

Multiple concrete cube benches were painted orange earlier this month, reports relate.

A bright, surprise makeover in the Winslow downtown area of Bainbridge Island, WA, has puzzled city leaders.

“This is something that was not authorized by the city,” Bainbridge Island City Manager Doug Schulze told city council June 16. “City staff didn’t do it.”

The Search is On

As of Wednesday (June 24), officials were still searching for a responsible party, according to reports.

“If you hear any rumors about who might have done this, we’d like to chat with them so that this doesn’t continue,” Schulze told the city council.

The pumpkin-colored makeover appears to have been done by a professional artist, according to local reports, noting there were no signs of dripping paint or spatters on nearby sidewalks.

What to Do?

Removing the orange paint is not going to be an easy undertaking, Schulze added.  Pressure washing or using solvents could damage the concrete, he said.

The city could, however, decide to leave the cubes painted orange or paint over them with a cement gray color.

Some residents and visitors to the Island would opt for the former. The color adds character, some have said, according to a local NBC News outlet.
