LONDON--A gray Monday morning took an unexpectedly bright turn this week for thousands of bridge commuters who happened upon the global debut of a movement to "spark joy" in city life.

About 150,000 pedestrians crossing London Bridge were greeted by thousands of colorful tiles arranged in a rainbow pattern along the length of the bridge. The dazzling path ended in a colorful exhortation to "LOVE MONDAYS."

The one-day art work June 22 was the kickoff project in a new global movement called Spark Your City, which aims to provide 1,000 "city sparks" in 50 cities worldwide, thus "transforming cities into living playgrounds."

Spark Your City calls itself "a global movement dedicated to spark joy in everyday city life." The initiative is underwritten by Kipling UK.

Love Mondays

"Love Mondays" was created by Gemma Cairney, a former BBC Radio morning host who "knows how it feels to be one of London's earliest commuters," according to the project website.

"Love Mondays" creator Gemma Cairney wanted "to make people smile on a gloomy Monday morning." The former BBC Radio morning host says she feels the early commuters' pain.

"I want to make people smile on a gloomy Monday morning," Cairney says.

To keep the "spark" in the initiative, organizers are not releasing a comprehensive list of cities and sparks.

A teaser description, however, informs users that the next spark will be Aug. 12 in London. In that spark, called "Urban Jungle," adventurer Helen Skelton "uncovers the adventurous hidden layers of London," the site says.

Those who want to keep up with the sparks may sign up for the Spark Your City free newsletter or follow @sparkyourcity on Twitter.
