SSPC Seeking Cream of the Coatings Crop

PITTSBURGH—Proud of a recently completed painting project? Be a structure showoff and nominate exceptional industrial and commercial coatings projects for the 2016 SSPC Structure Awards. 

SSPC members have until Oct. 1 to submit nominations for the annual awards, which recognize teams of contractors, designers, end users and coating manufacturers for excellence in coatings projects.

Winning projects will be recognized at the annual Awards Luncheon on Monday, Jan. 18 during SSPC 2016 featuring GreenCOAT, which will be held Jan. 18-21, 2016, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX.

The winners will also be featured in a photo essay in JPCL after the conference.

Seattle's Fremont Bridge, one of the busiest bascule bridges in the world, took home the 2015 George Campbell Award.

A representative of the structure owner must be willing to attend the luncheon to accept the award and give permission for the informaiton to appear in JPCL, SSPC advises.

SSPC says it is seeking nominations for all types of structures including bridges, tanks, concrete structures, and industrial and commercial facilities.

Award descriptions are listed below. Except for the Charles G. Munger and the Military Coatings awards, projects must have been completed between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.

Award Categories

William Johnson Award: For outstanding achievement demonstrating aesthetic merit. Qualities considered for aesthetic merit include color, gloss or texture, or that the coating on the structure compliments the environment while enhancing the structure itself. The coating may represent a theme, an object or a specific graphic design.

Crone Knoy Award: For outstanding achievement in coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. Examples include excellence in craftsmanship or execution of work and use of techniques or products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.

Charles G. Munger Award: For projects demonstrating outstanding longevity of the original coating. The structure may have had spot repairs or overcoating with the original coating still intact.

At SSPC 2014, the Marco Island Prudential Realty Building in Marco Island, FL, was honored with the Charles G. Munger Award.

George Campbell Award: For outstanding achievement in completing an exceptionally difficult or complex coatings project. Challenges may include work in extreme environmental conditions; strict time constraints, limited access or high traffic areas; structures with complex components; or coordination with multiple trades or sub-contractors.

Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence: For exceptional coatings work on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.
