FLINT, MI—What does a $600 million paint shop look like?

General Motors is offering a peak at the answer with a drone video tour of the facility now being built in Flint, MI.

The video gives a glimpse inside the 596,000-square-foot environmentally friendly paint shop.

GM broke ground on the plant March 3, 2014, and expects to finish construction in 2016.

Drone footage uploaded to YouTube gives a sneak peak into the $600 million, 596,000-square-foot environmentally friendly paint shop GM is currently constructing in Flint, MI.

The video was uploaded May 8 to YouTube by Tom Wickham, a communications manager for GM.

GM says it has invested $958 million in the Flint Assembly facility since 2009.

Wet-Coat Paint Process

The Flint Assembly plant is the third new paint plant in North America to use an environmentally friendly wet-coat paint process, according to GM. (The other two are the Fairfax plant in Kansas City, KS; and the Orion plant in Lake Orion, MI.)

GM says the new shop will:

  • Reduce paint sludge sent to landfills by 90 percent;
  • Use improved sealers and coatings to increase corrosion resistance;
  • Reduce gas consumption by 20 percent and electricity by 40 percent;
  • Improve air management; and
  • Be Energy Star rated (contingent on meeting all requirements).

Gallagher-Kaiser is building the plant. According to the company, about 10,000 tons of steel will be erected and 1.3 million square feet of concrete will be poured in the project.

That is quite the facility and will help the environment tremendously with the energy savings and less waste to land fills!
