HOUSTON—A new polyurethane coating has been developed to meet expanding Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) standards in North America.

Interthane 990V, part of AkzoNobel's International product line for North America, has a VOC level of 250 grams/liter.

The new product meets tighter standards recently introduced in Utah and expected in many Northeast states, according to AkzoNobel. Several California air districts already require 250 grams/liter for industrial maintenance coatings, it says.

AkzoNobel's Interthane 990V, part of its International product line for North America, boasts a VOC level of 250 grams/liter to meet tighter standards expected throughout the country.

The product does not contain hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), crystalline silica, or exempt solvents that are often used to lower VOCs but can diminish a coating's performance, the company says.

The product offers "the best gloss and color retention in the International polyurethane range," says Chris Tiernay, VP of the protective coatings business in North America.

Interthane 990V can be applied via brush, roll, or spray in the field or fabrication shop with "virtually no thinning," according to the company. The 71 percent-solids coating has thin-film capability.
