Montana-based builder Montainer has put out the welcome mat on a 192-square-foot prefab home made from a shipping container that can be delivered to your door.

The company says its Nomad 192 can be assembled on site in a day. The 24-foot-high base module, demonstrated in this video, costs $65,000. Additional modules can be added and stacked to create larger homes of unlimited layouts and sizes.

The home comes complete with appliances, cabinetry, and furniture. There is a fully functioning kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and a living area that doubles as a bedroom.

Montainer promotes its homes as backyard cabins, office space, in-law quarters, and vacation cottages.

Montainer promotes the container homes as regular homes, backyard cabins, offices, in-law quarters, and vacation cottages. Demonstrations of the units last fall drew more than 20,000 people in Missoula, MT, and Seattle, WA.

The code-compliant homes are configured from recycled shipping containers that Montainer bills as highly durable and low maintenance.

The Process

The company requires a $2,500 refundable downpayment that is applied to the purchase of the home.

After a customer reserves a home, Montainer says its "design team works with you personally to navigate all the details, through our design and permit review."

The Nomad 192 is named for the approximate square footage of the base model. Additional containers can be added in a variety of layouts and sizes.

The company, staffed by architects, builders and engineers, consults with customers on:

  • Module configuration and design;
  • Foundation and utility requirements; and
  • Site plan and permit assistance.

The design and permit review typically takes 30 days, the company says. After that, the company develops "a complete pricing proposal showing you exactly what your home will cost to produce, deliver and install."

The company advertises a "no-risk, money-back guarantee."

Took less than a minute to find a single-wide mobile home with over 3x the square footage for less than half the price. The materials and finish look much better on the container house, but the pricing difference (over 6x!) puts this firmly in the novelty category for me. If the container were more like the "tiny home" designs with loft sleeping it would be more interesting. I guess the intention is to sleep on that sofa since there is literally nowhere else to put a bed. Hopefully it folds flat.
