Chromate-Free Intermediate Self-Repairs

SOMERSET, NJ—A new high-performance intermediate coating from NEI Corp. provides active corrosion protection of structures by physically healing cracks and gaps that occur.

Nanomyte MEND-RT is a polymer nanocomposite that is designed to extend the life of a coating system when used between the primer and topcoat on a metal substrate.

Unlike self-healing coatings that use hexavalent chromium to self-heal chemically, MEND-RT autonomously closes gaps and seals cracks without chromates, according to NEI.

NEI illustrates the architecture of its self-healing coating system. At left (a), a defect occurs in the coating system. At right (b), self-healing MEND-RT closes the defect and prevents further crock propagation.

When physically damaged, the self-healing layer repairs the damage autonomously at near-ambient conditions, closing and sealing the gap and protecting the metal from exposure, the company says.

NEI says MEND-RT's "active" protection offers advances over coatings that passively provide only barrier protection and/or promote adhesion betwen the substrate and paint.

Application and Customization

The coating can be applied by dip, spray, brush or drawdown in any chromate-free coating system where self-healing is desired.

NEI photos show corrosion resistance for panels after 1,250 hours in a salt spray test: (a) is a commercial non-chromate coating system; (b), a commercial non-chromate system with MEND-RT.

The product will not deteriorate the original properties of the coating stack, the company says. It can be applied to ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys, such as magnesium, aluminum, copper, zinc and steel.

Given the variety of coating systems used in different applications, NEI says it can undertake an in-house study to evaluate the product's efficacy in a specific system. Also, the MEND-RT formulation can be customized to suit the requirements of an application, according to NEI.

Self healing coatings will be a lot more interesting when the damage being healed is an actual gap instead of the thinnest cut possible.
