New Caps Shield Steel Bolts from Fire

AkzoNobel has introduced a new product in North America for fire protection on the bolted connections of steel structures.

The Chartek Bolt Caps are part of its International product line.

The caps are manufactured in a single, uniform thickness from patented reinforced self-extinguishing polymeric material that can withstand high-heat temperatures and environments, the company says.

The Chartek Bolt Caps are for fire protection on bolted connections of steel structures.

After being snapped into place, the caps remain mechanically locked to the substrate during a fire with stainless steel gripping clips, according to the company.

The caps can be removed for inspection or when tightening bolts.

According to AkzoNobel, the caps have been tested for:

  • Cellulosic fire resistance up to three-hour rating;
  • Hydrocarbon pool fire resistance up to two-hour rating; and
  • Jet fire resistance up to two hours.
