An artist in New York has taken pouring out paint to a groovy new level.

Holton Rower’s unique technique involves pouring cups of colorful acrylic paint over canvas shaped with plywood and boxes.

The paint slowly flows over the shapes, drying to result in large hanging wall art that is almost symmetrical and hypnotic.

The technique is highly calculated; the dry times and spreading rates are precise, according to reports. While the rivers of paint may sometimes clump, fracture and extrude, that’s part of the art, reports say.

The Technique

Rower, 53, who grew up working in his father’s construction business, has been perfecting his signature paint pouring technique for the past few years, according to

A time-lapse video, shot by Dave Kaufman, captures Rower and his team pouring three paintings.

While it was originally filmed in 2010, the video was only recently shared on Facebook, where it reaped more than eight million views.

In 2012, pop-star Justin Bieber reportedly paid $60,000 for an original Rower pour painting.
