A UK competition is looking for a few good bunkers, spy lairs and more.

The “Going Underground: Drawing Competition,” announced Feb. 9 by waterproofing product manufacturer RIW and The Architects’ Journal, is an ideas contest to create a below-ground structure for any UK building or landmark.

“Make it a serious proposition, make it political, make it witty, make it down to earth (literally), make it practical, but most importantly, make it fantastic,” the announcement said.

The contest seeks underground ideas for UK buildings, such as London City Hall, designed by Foster + Partners.

The organizers are accepting designs until May 8. Only residents in the UK or the Republic of Ireland are able to enter.

Contest Details

The grand prize winner will receive £1,000 (about $1,536) worth of holiday vouchers.

The top six shortlisted entries will be invited to a winners’ lunch to be held in June and will be featured in a six-page article in the Architects’ Journal.

Entries can be hand-drawn sketches or full CAD drawings, but must be submitted using this entry form e-mailed to goingunderground@cibcomms.co.uk.

Judges are Make Architects' founder Ken Shuttleworth and Rory Olcayto, editor of the AJ.

Building Below

The contest is inspired by the increasing pressure to build downward.

In recent years, Britain’s wealthiest residents have opted to carve below their mansions to make room for extra bedrooms, bowling alleys and tennis courts.

These so-called “iceberg homes” are controversial, as neighbors have complained of years of “misery from noise, vibration, dust and construction traffic,” as well as structural concerns, according to authorities.

In December 2014, the London boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea put limits on the subterranean enclaves.
