Nissan in Europe is all aglow over its latest coup: glow-in-the-dark paint for its all-electric Leaf.

No, you can't order the paint yet, but the manufacturer is showing it off anyway in a new video that describes the UV-energized spray-applied coating.

The "secret formula" is "made up of entirely organic materials" that include Strontium Aluminate (the odorless, nonflammable powder that makes other glow-in-the-dark paints glow in the dark), according to a Nissan announcement.

The "secret formula" is "made up of entirely organic materials" that include Strontium Aluminate.

The company says it worked with Hamish Scott, the developer of STARPATH, a UV-powered pavement material that absorbs UV energy during the day and glows for eight to 10 hours after dark.

"Various third-party companies have applied non-organic glow-in-the-dark paint to vehicles before, but Nissan is the first car maker to directly apply such technology," the company says.

"Nissan's unique paint, if made commercially available, would last for 25 years."

The paint job is a tangential, if eye-catching, pitch for the Leaf. Nissan says that savings from the car allow its owners to buy other environmentally friendly items, especially solar panels.

While glow-in-the-dark automotive coatings may not yet be ready for prime time, pavements are powering up. In addition to the STARPATH product, glow-in-the-dark materials are being tested on highways and bike paths.
