TQC's new Low-Voltage Pinhole Detector allows users to inspect various coatings on conductive substrates for holidays, pinholes and other small defects using the "wet sponge technique."

The unit is available in two models: Basic (LD8100, 9V and 90V) and Advanced (LD8105, 9V, 24V, 67.5V and 90V).

TQC's new Low Voltage Pinhole Detectors use the "wet sponge technique" to detect coating defects.

For each model, the grounding clamp is connected to an untreated piece of the substrate (which is electrically connected with the measurement area), where the wet sponge is used to probe the entirety of the coating with the selected voltage.

When current flows from the sponge wand to the grounding clamp, this indicates a defect in the coating. The user will be notified using the selected feedback method(s): buzzer, vibration, headphones and/or display.

The number of detected pinholes is stored in memory and remains available after power down, even when replacing batteries. This memory can be cleared by the user.

Both models operate with a single button, measure up to 500 μm coating thickness, and have a full-color OLED display.

TQC notes that reliable and valid detection is possible only on clean coatings. Measurements on dirty, excessively wet or otherwise contaminated surfaces are unreliable, the manufacturer advises.

TQC, based in the Netherlands, designs and produces field measuring instruments and lab equipment for testing paint and coatings and general surface treatment.
