Santa brought Kevin Buchanan more than he realized on Christmas Day.

The construction worker had stopped at the gym, then for breakfast, and finally at his local convenience store to try his day-off luck with the lottery.

A couple of scratch-off tickets busted, then Buchanan put down $20 for a ticket to "Hit $5,000,000."

And did.

New York State Lottery

Construction-worker-turned-millionaire Kevin Buchanan gets his big check from Gretchen Dizer of the New York State Lottery. His lump-sum payoff will amount to $3.2 million.

As he sat in a store chair and scratched, he thought he'd won $500, then $5,000, Yonkers' newest millionaire told reporters at a presentation Wednesday (Jan. 30). But more zeroes kept appearing.

"I almost fell out of my chair," said the father of three.

“I thought something was wrong with the ticket, so I scanned it in the machine and the display said ‘Big Money Winner.’”

Buchanan told New York Lottery's Gretchen Dizer that he had played the same numbers —29, 26, 12, 12—his whole life. And they had brought him a couple $500 payoffs, he said.

But never this many zeroes. And just for the record, Buchanan's odds of winning the big one are 1 in 3,399,000, according to the New York State Lottery.

Buchanan opted to take his winnings in a lump sum that nets him $3,235,132. He said he planned to "pay bills, buy a house, buy a car, and invest the rest."

"Nothing is really going to change," he told lottery officials. "I’m just going to live like I always did.”

But he did not say who he worked for—or whether he would be in Monday.
