SSPC 2015 will take place Feb. 3-6 in Las Vegas. The annual event is the only conference and exhibition dedicated exclusively to protective, marine, industrial and commercial coatings.

The full technical program is available here.

3 Workshops

The commercial/architectural workshops, sponsored by Durability + Design, will be presented Feb. 4. Descriptions appear below.

  • New Construction Coating Design/Specification Workshop,” instructed by Davis Kyle, Master Painters Institute; and Richard Watson, The Sherwin-Williams Company.

This two-hour workshop will cover the steps for selecting architectural coating systems to address project-specific needs and preparing the specification for doing the work. It will focus on the MPI decision tree for architectural (new construction) coating selection and the use of AIA Masterspec to create specifications.

  • QA During Painting of Buildings Workshop,” instructed by Ken Trimber, KTA-Tator Inc.

This two-hour workshop will address the inspection steps necessary to implement the requirements of the specification, including hands-on use of instruments for verifying and measuring cleaning, ambient conditions, moisture testing, wet and dry film thickness, and continuity (air leak detector).

The SSPC's Commercial Coatings Committee is developing guides and standards for commercial, institutional and architectural coatings work.

  • Building Science/WUFI Workshop,” instructed by David de Sola, 3ive LLC; Kevin Brown, KTA-Tator Inc.; and Kevin Knight, Retro-Specs Ltd.

This three-hour afternoon workshop will address building science and explain why coatings are an integral component of the building assembly for both new construction and maintenance. It will introduce WUFI, a computer-based program used to simulate hygrothermal (heat and moisture) behavior of building assemblies, and demonstrate how WUFI can be used in building envelope design for new and restoration building projects.

Attendees will gain an understanding of how the interior and exterior environment affect the selection of building envelope components and coating systems for masonry walls; the effect that coating permeance on exterior and interior walls has on wetting the interior of wall cavities; why coating systems that perform well on a Midwestern U.S. building exterior may not work on an identical building in the Southeast; and the value of WUFI in selecting the optimal type and placement of coatings, insulation, and air/vapor barrier materials for building wall assemblies.

SSPC Technical Committee to Meet

SSPC’s Commercial Coatings Committee will meet Feb. 5.

Established in October 2011, the committee is developing guides and standards for coatings work on commercial, institutional and architectural buildings.

Standards, guides and methods in development include:

  • A standard involving the education and certification of applicators;
  • A performance standard for elastomeric coatings on concrete and masonry;
  • A guide for evaluating slip resistance of flooring materials;
  • A field method for measuring the moisture content of concrete walls and ceilings; and
  • A guide for laboratory testing to evaluate performance of thin-film coatings on CMU assemblies.

SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings was founded in 1950 as the Steel Structures Painting Council. Today, the Pittsburgh-based association focuses on the protection and preservation of architectural, industrial and marine structures through the use of high-performance protective, marine and industrial coatings.
