Five Star Painting, a commercial and residential franchise, has grown to 77 franchise locations across North America.

Utah-based Five Star was established in 2000. In 2007, Five Star merged with Painter Ready, a commercial painting franchise system. Together, the companies then had 57 franchisees.

A 2010 article by Painting and Wallcovering Contractor offered a detailed look at Five Star and other painting franchises.

Growth and Change

The Five Star brand "has become one of the fastest-growing painting franchises in North America," according to Dwyer's acquisition announcement. The company says its portfolio includes three World Cup stadiums.

Dwyer CEO and president Mike Bidwell credits the franchise's growth to the company's "values of quality, affordability, expertise, recognition and integrity"—values that "should harmonize nicely" with Dwyer's, the company said.

Five Star's operations and "key staff members" will transition from Utah to Waco, TX, Dwyer said.

The Dwyer Group

The Dwyer Group waas established in 1981 as Rainbow International. Today, Rainbow International Restoration is one of its eight franchise service subsidiaries.

Five Star president Matt Phillips assumes the new role of Chief Operating Officer. Mary Kay Liston, who had been VP of Operations for Dwyer's Mr. Appliance, becomes president of Five Star.

Accelerating Franchises

Bidwell said Five Star "is enjoying some good momentum and we look forward to accelerating that success...."

He said Dwyer would encourage more painting franchises by offering "lower capital requirements and less of the technical skills required of other service brands at The Dwyer Group."

The Dwyer Group also owns Aire Serv, Glass Doctor, The Grounds Guys, Mr. Appliance, Mr. Electric, Mr. Rooter (Drain Doctor in the UK and Portugal), and Rainbow International, which together have about 1,600 franchisees.
