When life hands you gutters—and in residential construction, life always hands you gutters—why not make ... music?

That was apparently the Eureka! question that appeared to three German artists, who seized a building's most pedestrian component and turned it into a creative opportunity.

Rainfall means music in the "Courtyard of Elements."

The result: The "Courtyard of Elements," one of several transformed tenement exteriors in Dresden's artsy student district.

The Neustadt Kunstofpassage project features five interconnected courtyards transformed by local artists, reports Lonely Planet.

In the Courtyard of the Elements, rainfall creates "music" as it runs through a Rube Goldberg-type installation of funnels, drains and gutters over the building's turquoise exterior.

It's not just the students who are wild in the "Courtyard of the Animals." The courtyard is one of five given artistic treatment in Dresden's student district.

Other spaces in the enclave are the Courtyard of Animals, Courtyard of Mythical Creatures, Courtyard of the Metamorphoses and Courtyard of Light. The artistic makeovers backdrop a growing young cultural scene, reports say.

As for the musical quality of the Courtyard of the Elements: It may not be a tune you can hum along to, but it's sure to beat what's playing at other gutters near you.

Looks fun, as long as I'm not the one unclogging it!
