A search is underway for a successor to longtime SSPC Executive Director Bill Shoup, who plans to retire from the society in September.

Founded in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1950, SSPC is a non-profit association focused on the use of protective coatings for the preservation of infrastructure, industrial and marine assets. Renamed The Society for Protective Coatings in 1997, SSPC retains the abbreviation of its original name: the Steel Structures Painting Council.

SSPC's mission is to advance the technology and promote the appropriate use of protective coatings as designated in its certification process and published standards, which are recognized and specified worldwide.

Farewell, Bill

Bill Shoup, SSPC's Executive Director since 1999, is set to retire in September. The Board of Governors is now working to recruit his replacement.

"Making tough decisions comes naturally to a former lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, and Bill relied on those strengths to lead SSPC to its current stature as a thriving, relevant, world-renowned membership organization servicing the protective coating industry," SSPC's Board of Governors wrote in the December issue of JPCL, the society's journal.

Under Shoup's leadership, SSPC's individual membership has expanded from 7,000 to 11,000 and organizational membership has increased more than 50 percent. Training and certification programs have increased from two in 1995 to 39 in 2014.

SSPC now has chapters in Canada, Spain, Saudi Arabia, India, Japan and other countries, and its international reach continues to grow with ISO, training and accreditation.

"We appreciate Bill's sincere dedication and arrival at work with the sunrise every day," the board said. "Bill has always taken his role seriously and, in his own way, has had the ability to mix fun and humor into the workplace.

"The Board of Governors and SSPC staff wish Bill much happiness and good health as he begins his journey into retirement along with his wife Diane, his children, grandchilden and his golf clubs," the board said.

Finding the Next Leader

The new Executive Director will be expected to:

  • Provide strong leadership to SSPC's staff of 30;
  • Effectively communicate SSPC's mission, programs and services throughout the industry; and
  • Continue to expand the association's reach globally.

The role of the Executive Director is to provide strong internal leadership; communicate SSPC's mission, programs and services; and expand its reach globally.

The director will be responsible for working with members, member organizations and stakeholders to develop and execute standards and policies that provide value to current members, while engaging new stakeholders and members.

The candidate must be experienced in the cultural nuances of international travel and know how to communicate SSPC's mission to a global audience.

Essential Functions

SSPC's chief executive, the Executive Director formulates and executes policies as approved by the Board of Governors, overseeing planning, programs and new product development.

At a time of unprecedented growth for the industry, the new director will have a critical role in taking SSPC to the next level of success.
