The explanation may be more confusing than the original mystery.

But the answer to "what turned the Bulgarian cat green?" appears to be: paint.

Not that the fluffy new Internet star was painted by vandals, as feline fanciers worldwide had feared.

Cat lovers worldwide united in a Facebook hunt for pranksters who had colored the kitty.

There was even a Facebook page at one point non-pithily called "Punishment to the perpetrator of this criminal act." It was that hunt for the perpetrators that apparently sent the kitty's video viral.

Sleeping on Paint

Now, however, reports are saying that the kitty absorbed its spectacular emerald coat by sleeping on an abandoned pile of green paint in a construction yard in the seaside resort town of Varna on the Black Sea.

News media worldwide have repeated the theory endlessly, although none explain (at least, in English) exactly how the phenomenon occurred.

"Gradually, it is believed that the paint slowly covered the entire cat – giving him his unusually vibrant appearance," reported The Independent in the UK.

The fancy feline was spotted hanging out with a ginger pal in the seaside resort of Varna.

"Stray cat mistakenly turns itself green," announced Fox News.

The cat "just slept in the wrong place," concluded the New York Daily News.

Whatever the reason, it is apparently not easy being green—or, perhaps, staying green.

On Thursday (Dec. 11), Britain's Daily Mail declared that the kitty had now vanished.

"There are theories that it has been kidnapped," the news outlet opined. "Or," it added, "the paint has washed off."
