Comment | More

NACE and SSPC are seeking input on their joint applicator certification standard as they prepare to review and revise the standard.

The required five-year review and revision are for SSPC/NACE Joint Applicator Certification Standard (SSPC-ACS 1/NACE No. 13), "Industrial Coating and Lining Application Specialist Qualification and Certification."

What it Covers

The standard provides criteria for the education, training, experience, knowledge, and skills required by an Application Specialist to prepare and apply protective coatings to steel and concrete surfaces of complex industrial structures.

The standard provides training and certification criteria for Application Specialists who prepare and apply protective coatings to steel and concrete surfaces of complex industrial structures.

The qualification and certification process is a stepwise achievement process that includes all aspects of surface preparation and coating application for steel and concrete surfaces of complex industrial structures.

The intended audience includes persons involved in developing education and certification programs for the training and assessment of the skills and knowledge of an Application Specialist or assessing the training and certification programs available either on the open market or from an in-house source.

This standard may also be used to certify Application Specialists for other substrates or conditions as considered appropriate by facility owners, contractors, or certifying agencies. It is the basis for SSPC's Coating Application Specialist (CAS) Program.

SSPC, NACE Reviewers Sought

A joint task group of NACE and SSPC members is preparing the draft revisions for the standard. The proposed revisions will be vote on by consensus committees within NACE and SSPC.

SSPC members who are interested in joining the SSPC review committee may email Aimée Beggs, SSPC Standards Development Specialist, or call Beggs at 412-288-6042.

Voting members will be accepted until Dec. 7, 2014. Nonvoting members may be added to the review group at any time and will be able to review and submit comments on drafts.

The NACE canvass on the standard is also underway; the deadline to respond is Friday (Dec. 5).  Any interested party (NACE members or non-members) may join the voting list by setting up a password on the NACE website and registering his or her classification. The committee is Task Group 320, and the task group is administered by NACE.

For more information about the NACE canvass, email Trudy Schreiner or call Schreiner at 281-228-6208.
