The 470,000-gallon water storage tank in Kilgore, TX, will require repairs, cleaning and recoating. Bids are due Dec. 2, and the project's estimated cost is $200,000.

Abrasive blast cleaning will conform to SSPC Mineral and Slag Abrasive standards; however, copper slag will not be permitted. Full containment will be required as the existing coatings contain lead.

The interior paint system will be the manufacturer’s proprietary system with a total dry film thickness of 11 to 16 mils. Exterior painting should maintain a total dry film thickness of 7 to 11 mils.

Interior and exterior surfaces will be white, and will use a multi-color system for any surfaces receiving more than one coat. Each coat will be tinted differently, from light to dark to ensure adequate coverage.

The contractor is expected to use a flexible caulking or sealant approved for use with potable water compatible with an epoxy lining system. All coatings should reflect SSPC “Good Painting Practice” procedures.

The exterior of this tank is ideal for UHP WJ, which I believe would prove to be very cost effective. When will the municipal tank industry come to the modern world, at least for the exterior removal.
