In the Netherlands, thousands of stones topped with smart coatings are lighting up a new bike path designed to invoke Vincent van Gogh's famous painting, "The Starry Night."

The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bicycle path, a permanent installation that opened Nov. 12, runs between Eindhoven and Neunen, two areas where van Gogh once lived.

The path's opening marks the start of the Van Gogh 2015 international theme year to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the artist's death.

The permanent installation opened Nov. 12 after eight months of design and 10 days of construction.

The project was developed by designer Dan Roosegaarde, creative director at Studio Roosegaard, and Heijmans, a civil engineering and infrastructure company.

'Techno-Poetry'

The stones are covered with smart coatings that charge during the day and glow for up to eight hours at night. On cloudier days, a solar panel is also used to charge the trail.

It links the Opwettense and Colse watermills, which were featured in Van Gogh's paintings, according to the design studio.

"I wanted to create a place that people will experience in a special way, the technical combined with experience, that's what techno-poetry means to me," Roosegaarde said in a press release.

According to the designers, €700,000 (4877,632 USD) was invested in the bike path.

The design took eight months and construction took 10 days, ABCNews reported

Glowing Collaborations

Roosegaarde and Heijmans also collaborates on a project called the Smart Highway, which aims to make highways more sustainable and provide roadside lighting with smart coatings. The sustainable road idea won Best Future Concept at the Dutch Design Awards in 2013.

The studio has around 20 ideas it hopes to incorporate into the futuristic highways one day. Earlier this year, they installed three bright green lines made from paint containing a photo-luminescent powder to light up a 0.3-mile section of a highway in the Netherlands.
