A new pipe location system from 3M can identify underground plastic pipes without using tracer wire or installing access points.

The system, consisting of Electronic Marking System Caution Tape 7600 Series and the Dynatel EMS Marker/Tape Locator Model 7420, is the first in a series of products for marking and locating the path of underground plastic pipes, according to 3M.

The system is intended for gas, water and telecom utility owners; contractors; and excavators.

The locator emits a radio frequency signal, which is received by the tape and reflected back to the locator, 3M says of its new pipe location system.

According to the company, the caution tape does not need an external power source and, if part of the tape is cut or removed, the locator is still able to identify and locate the tape.

Each marker has a 50-year lifespan and is encased in plastic to help protect it from corrosion, the company says.

How it Works

The tape will be avalable in four different frequencies to positively identify the desired target utility (gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications).

The locator emits a radio frequency signal, which is received by the tape and reflected back to the locator, the company explains. The locator's screen displays what type of utility was identified and how deep the tape is located.

According to the company, the locator is capable of detecting the caution tape, locating all EMS markers, and reading and writing to 3M iD Markers.

Avoiding Accidental Strikes

"We believe this new plastic pipe locating technology will significantly improve productivity and safety issues from accidental strikes of buried underground assets," said Ed Scott, business development manager of 3M Electrical Markets Division.

"It will help minimize third-arty damage to critical infrastructure," said Scott.
