The comeback in the U.S. construction industry is carrying strong growth for wood coatings and preservatives, a new report concludes.

Demand for those products is expected to expand by 5.3 percent per year, reaching $5.1 billion in 2018, according to U.S. Wood Protection Coatings & Preservatives Market, from The Freedonia Group Inc., a Cleveland-based market research firm.

Demand Drivers

The growth will be driven primarily by trends in key applications such as furniture, decking and siding.

Residential end uses make up the largest market for wood protection products, driven primarily by maintenance demand for items such as decks, siding and fences.

Rebounding spending for new construction, improvement and repair will ignite sales, the 329-page forecast reports.

Increasing adoption of higher-priced products, such as combined paint and primer, and stain and sealer coating products, will add to the gains.

Competition for Share

Some of the growth will be restrained by pressures on the market base of wood products.

For instance, wood faces competition from alternative materials like woodplastic composites and plastics, which are often more durable and require less maintenance.

In addition, newer wood protection products last longer and perform with fewer coats or less initial treatment, further restraining volume gains, Freedonia reported.

Coatings, Preservatives Demand

Coatings such as stains, paints, sealers and primers account for the majority of wood-protection product demand; stains and paints hold the largest shares. Lumber preservatives, which are applied by wood treatment companies, occupy a smaller niche.

Coatings (e.g., stains, paints, sealers, primers) account for the majority of wood-protection product demand, with stains and paints holding the two largest shares.

Maintenance coatings account for a larger share of the market than coatings used on new products, according to Freedonia. Indeed, the maintenance market helped support coating sales during the recession and slow recovery of 2008 to 2013, even as demand for new coatings fell, the firm reported.

Looking ahead, increasing new construction and consumer spending will boost demand for wood protection coatings, particularly for new uses, through 2018, the report said.

Preservatives sales will gain from the availability of micronized formulations, which are less corrosive than conventional versions.

Gains by Application

Furniture, decking and siding were the three largest applications by value in 2013. However, smaller windows and doors and cabinets applications are projected to achieve faster growth through 2018, the report noted.

Paint is the dominant protection product used on siding and windows and doors, while stains and sealers are more widely used on decks, cabinets, furniture and flooring.

Outdoor applications, meanwhile, are more likely to use pressure-treated or otherwise preserved wood.

Other Highlights

The report provides demand data for 2003, 2008 and 2013 as well as forecasts for 2018 and 2023 by product, application and market.

Additionally, the report provides:

  • Market environment factors;
  • Company market share; and
  • Profiles of 27 U.S. industry players, including BASF, Valspar, Behr and Sherwin-Williams.
