Conceding that the transition to LEED v4 will not be easy, the U.S. Green Building Council has extended the deadline for registering projects under the current LEED 2009 rating system.

Project teams may now use the 2009 version until Oct. 31, 2016.

The LEED v4 update was rolled out in November 2013 after years of development. At that time, officials said LEED 2009 would be available for project certification only until June 15, 2015.

However, during its Greenbuild conference Oct. 22-23, the USGBC encountered a green-building market not quite ready to embrace its latest system.

USGBC says LEED v4 was not meant to be easy. The implementation deadline has been extended.

A survey found that more than 60 percent of respondents said they were “not ready” or “unsure” if they were ready to pursue LEED v4 and needed additional time to prepare, according to USGBC.

“When USGBC launched LEED v4 last year, we set out with one goal in mind—to raise the bar in a way that challenges the building industry to reach higher than ever before […],”said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC.

“However, the market has requested additional time to prepare for LEED v4, so we are responding.”

International users have also requested more time to move to the new system, he added.

‘Not Designed to Be Easy’

LEED v4 will remain available for those in the industry who are ready, the organization said.

The Haworth Beijing Organic Showroom in Beijing, China, achieved LEED v4 Gold for its commercial interior space. The showroom is owned by Haworth, an office furniture designer and manufacturer, and the LEED process was administered by Bisagni Environmental Enterprise (BEE) Inc.

“LEED v4 wasn’t designed to be easy. It is the next generation of green building, and we are confident the market will meet us there as they have in years past,” added Fedrizzi.
