The U.S. has seen strong numbers in coatings exports so far in 2014, the American Coatings Association reported.

According to the Census Bureau's International Trade Statistics, U.S. coatings exports through July 2014 were $1.61 billion, while imports were $593.6 million.

According to ACA, the U.S. could see a net surplus in coatings trade of nearly $2 billion for the entirety of 2014.

At this point in 2014, Canada and Mexico have the largest export markets, and Canada and Germany are the largest sources of imported coatings, ACA reported.

On Track for $2B

"Although the manufacturing sector has long seen substantial trade deficits, the coatings industry has traditionally been a strong net export sector," ACA said.

"Should this trend continue, the United States is likely to enjoy a net surplus in coatings trade of nearly $2 billion for the full year 2014."
