Great Valley Tools has introduced a hand tool designed to cut easily through thick metal penetrations for quicker, safer installation of roofs, vent pipes, skylights and air registers.

The Metal Pecker resembers a bolt cutter, but its cutting head features a patented slot-shear design that can chew through under-folds, seams, overlaps and up and down the profile, the manufacturer says. The tool can be used by a variety of trades.

Great Valley Tools says its new Metal Pecker has "1001 deconstruction uses." The tool debuts Oct. 1 at Metalcon.

"Cutting penetrations in profiled metal roof and duct can be one of the most challenging tasks for installers," the company says. "It’s also dangerous back-breaking work and the less time you spend on a roof in hazardous conditions, the better."

According to the manufacturer, the cutter blade shears the metal between the anvils and pushes out a 1.7- x 0.24-inch metal slug with each cutting stroke. It leaves no swarf to rust, and there is no sharp blade face to blunt, the company says.

The tool cleanly cuts both high-tensile and soft metal sheet without deforming the substrate, the company says.

Great Valley Tools will demonstrate the Metal Pecker at Metalcon 2014, set for Oct. 1-3 in Denver, CO. The tool will be available in North America.
