How do you build the Western hemisphere’s tallest residential tower and keep it pencil slim?

With “purity of engineering” and one heck of a backbone, the project’s structural engineer explains.

In 2015, the New York skyline will add 432 Park Avenue, designed by Rafael Viñoly, to its picturesque vista. The skinny high-rise, 1,400 feet tall, will offer some of the most luxurious, most expensive condominiums in Midtown Manhattan.

In this video, the project's structural engineer describes how the super slim skyscraper  is being designed and constructed.

In a recent video posted by World Architecture News, the project’s structural engineer—Silvian Marcus, CEO of WSP Cantor Seinuk—described how the slender building is being constructed.

‘Purity in Engineering’

He explained that the project represents “a purity in engineering,” featuring a square center (about 30 feet long and 30 feet wide) that houses mechanical elements surrounded by 30-inch-thick walls made of reinforced concrete.

Silvian Marcus says that 432 Park Avenue represents "a purity in engineering."

The square acts as the “backbone” of the slim building.

The building’s façade, made of beams and columns, also helps to support and frame the tower, Marcus said.

“From the core backbone to the outside perimeter is about 30 feet that is free of any columns, beams or any structural elements, so you can have partitions as you wish or if someone wants to take the entire floor and doesn’t want partitions—he wants a loft—people can use the entire floor as they desire,” the engineer said.

A $95M Home

“We created a place for the people to feel like home,” Marcus said.

Buyers have purchased at least half of the structure’s 104 apartments. One of the elite residences was sold for $95 million, according to the New York Times.
