As we approach the final days of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, haunting new photographs offer a sobering view of what can happen to all of that shiny Olympic construction after the party is over.
The photographs, showing the dilapidated and abandoned state of the 1984 Winter Olympic venues in Bosnia’s capital city, have gone viral.
The tragic images depict how quickly things can change, according to Viral Forest.
Less than 10 years after Sarajevo hosted the world competitions, the city was torn apart during a period of civil war spanning three years, from 1992 to 1995. More than 100,000 were killed throughout Bosnia.

Cities that host Olympic Games often spend billions on new venues for the events. Those built for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo have been abandoned and left to rot since the Bosnian Civil War.

Many of the once-gleaming Olympic facilities were used as artillery strongholds, battlegrounds and makeshift graveyards during the war, according to various reports.
Only a crumbling, overgrown and vandalized Olympic village remains.
Sarajevo’s rotting venues are not alone. This slideshow, posted by Huffington Post, shows images of neglected billion-dollar venues from the 2004 Olympics in Athens and 2008 in Beijing.
