Goat farmers in Pescadero, CA, have introduced a paint they say is safe enough to lick from the brush.

Harley Farms' FarmPaint is a non-toxic, non-caustic goat-milk paint for use on walls, furniture, decks and more.

FarmPaint can be applied to wood, textured walls, concrete, plaster, metal, clay, ceramics and canvas. Nine colors are available.

FarmPaint is recommended for use in nurseries.

Ingredients listed by the manufacturer are calcium carbonate; flax seed oil; water; milk protein (casein); goat milk soap; pigment; and salt.

Harley Farms says that the product will dry to an "intense suede-finish," which is traditional of milk paints. Also, the milk paint will not produce the same uniform coverage typical of latex product, the company notes.

The paints are available in a four-ounce sample size, quart, gallon and five-gallon pail, via the company's website.

Milk paint has been used for several centuries. The oldest painted surfaces were coated with a form of milk paint.
