Silicone Air-Barrier System Bows

Dow Corning Corp. says it set out to “build a better barrier” with its latest collection of silicone technologies formulated to protect the building envelope.

The Dow Corning Silicone Air Barrier System is designed for use in both new construction and building renovation projects, according to product literature.

Dow Corning says its new Silicone Air Barrier System offers UV resistance, weatherability and simplified installation.

The company said the air barrier system components delivered “more of what architects need to design more sustainable, near zero-energy buildings,” including weatherability, airtightness, UV resistance, and a simplified installation.

The system includes:

  • DefendAir 200: A 100 percent silicone liquid-applied air and weather barrier that cures to form a seamless, flexible membrane. The product is vapor-permeable, exceeds industry requirements for airtight performance, and does not have a limit on UV exposure.
  • Silicone Transition System: Featuring 100 percent silicone rubber strips and corners that are easy to install with silicone sealants (not mechanical fasteners), this system forms a continuous airtight transition from the window to the wall.
  • Dow Corning brand silicone sealants: Dow Corning’s 758 Silicone Weather Barrier Sealant and 791 Silicone Weatherproofing Sealant are compatible for use with the components of the barrier system.

DefendAir 200 easily applies over construction substrates for ensured airtight performance, the company says.

The system is backed by warranty options of up to 15 years when installed per Dow Corning published guidelines. Shorter-term warranties are also available.

Dow Corning offers silicon-based additives, resins and binders for the coatings industry.
